Learning to think right.

I’m learning a lot from the other people at Stone Cobra. Among the most valuable lessons have been: knowing when to ask for help instead of frustrating myself on a simple problem, and knowing when to step back and start over.

A lot of times the initial way I tried to approach a  problem was inherently flawed and even though or I could make it work… I’ll probably spend more time on that then I would by taking a step back and examining why I was doing it that way to start with. On top of that, my initial problems will also invariably cause some kind of unexpected results later on as my app grows and gets larger.

I got a real lesson in both of these today from Steve who after I detailed a seemingly minor problem I was having for about 26 seconds said, in typical Steve fashion, “Do you want to keep telling me, because I’ve already solved your problem.” After an explanation of how my app should work, I realized that stepping back a revision and re-approaching my problem would actually be super quick and allow me to keep the app more expandable without any nasty little errors in the future.

All that being said, Krista’s right. The app is getting really close. There’s only a couple more medium/large hurdles to overcome on the largest part of the app and then it should all come together really quickly. I’m so stoked to talk more openly about what we’re working on and how developing for the iPhone has been. What I can say about our first app however, is that it’s shaping up to be a simple solution to a practical problem… but also is just a little bit funky (in a good way) and fun.
